Set in an impressive Victorian mansion, known as Wardown Park, is the Luton Museum & Gallery. Exhibits include a mixture of natural history and archaeological displays tracing back the history of the area. There’s also an interesting collection of hats and lace.
The other museum worth taking a tour of is the Stockwood Craft Museum and Gardens. There you can explore the prize collection of horse-drawn carriages, as well as great craft demonstrations throughout the summer. There are also some stunning period gardens to wander through that will no doubt get you inspired with a few ideas to try on your own garden.
For a day out that younger children will adore, take a drive out to Woodside Animal Farm. The friendly farm is open to visitors and has a wealth of animals, including a fair few exotic breeds such as llamas and lemurs. There’s also in excellent children’s adventure playground area.
At the John Dony Field Centre you’ll find a selection of exhibits on the area’s conservation work, as well as details on Luton’s natural history. It also offers advice on the best places to get out and about around Luton to see the countryside.
If you’re looking to keep fit during your time in Luton a good place to start is the Lea Manor Recreation Centre. Facilities include a well-equipped gym, aerobics classes, or test out the sauna and steam rooms. Post-workout take advantage of either the café or bar area, the choice is yours.
