Luton, Bedfordshire -travel information and accommodation
Luton is located in the county of Bedfordshire. It lies in the heart of England and is a just 30 minutes north of London, making the area an accessible choice for locals wishing to commute to the capital. Alternatively, more and more businesses are seeing the appeal of relocating to the area, yet still remaining within easy access to London and of course Luton Airport.
The presence of the River Lea led to a settlement being built up in the Luton area as far back as 2000 BC, although back then it was referred to as Icknield Way. For the oldest surviving building track down St Mary’s Church, the most historic part of which is around 850 years. Luton later became the centre of the British hat making industry in around the 17th century, when lots of factories and warehouses sprung up in order to keep up with demand.
Having said that, Luton is very much a modern town with plenty of entertainment options, including the busy Arndale shopping centre. There’s also the popular Galaxy Centre with its 11-screen cinema, ten-pin bowling alley, bingo club and a wealth of restaurants to choose from all under one roof. What’s more when you’ve explored a little you can go further a field and discover the local countryside, including the nearby Chiltern Hills.
